Hoping to see more of the Star Lord/Thor dynamic? Looks like you’re in luck: In an interview promoting his new film Bloodshot, actor Vin Diesel confirmed that the Guardians of the Galaxy would appear in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Love and Thunder: The Scoop
Monday morning, Brandon Davis of Comicbook.com broke the scoop. In an interview promoting Bloodshot, Vin Diesel was asked about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. Diesel responded that he was waiting and excited for James Gunn to ‘knock it out of the park’. But he also revealed that he had met with Taika Waititi because Thor: Love and Thunder will ‘incorporate’ some of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Larger Picture
This reveal makes sense and confirms several rumors. Firstly Avengers Endgame ended with Thor leaving Valkyrie as ruler of the Asgardian colony on Earth and departing with the Guardians of the Galaxy as they embarked on their quest to find Gamora. Building off the strong chemistry the Guardians and Thor had in Avengers Infinity War. It was thought that this plot point would be resolved in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 until Thor: Love and Thunder was announced. Later Guardians director James Gunn later stated in a comment on Instagram that Love and Thunder took place chronologically before Vol.3.
What Else We Know So Far
Thor: Love and Thunder will film in Australia this summer. Taika Waititi is currently working with writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson on the most recent draft of the script. As that summer shooting date draws nearer, and the film nears to wrapping pre-production, more and more details of it are coming to light. Taika confirmed that Natalie Portman’s Jane Porter would not replace Chris Hemsworth as Thor.
Rather, ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ would have two Thors. Loudwire confirmed that the film will use the Dio song Rainbow in the Dark. A song previous heard during the film’s presentation at ComicCon. We previously reported the scoop that Christian Bale was in talks to play the villain of the film. Tessa Thompson later confirmed he had been cast. Now Vin Diesel has confirmed that the Guardians will have a presence in the film as well. Though how big a role the Guardians will have is not clear yet.
Expectations for Thor: Love and Thunder
For many Thor: Love and Thunder is one of the most anticipated films of Marvel’s Phase 4. Thor: Ragnarok is not only the most popular film in the Thor series but one of the most popular films in the MCU. Needless to say expectations for the sequel are high. It’s definitely clear that Love of the Thunder is less Thor 4 as it is Ragnarok 2. With Waititi promising to double down on everything that made Ragnarok such a breath of fresh air. The return of the Guardians of the Galaxy only confirms that Waititi intends to keep that promise. But….
Tthe return of Natalie Portman and the casting of Christian Bale also tease that Waititi has created a really strong dramatic story. As the project moves into filming it’ll be interesting to see what other bits and pieces leak out to keep us on the edge of our seats until November of 2021.
