After months of waiting and watching, Star Wars fans were held with baited breath on Monday night. What was Project Luminous? Was it a new movie? Was it a new TV show? It turned out to be a little smaller than what we expected. It’s still a huge undertaking for Star Wars though. In an announcement made on the Star Wars website here, we found out.
We’re going to be going to an era of Star Wars that hasn’t been explored by very many. The High Republic era. Set around 200 years before the Skywalker Saga. Officially titled Star Wars: The High Republic, it won’t overlap with anything that’s been previously filmed or shown. Creators in this new project will have untapped levels of creativity to work with. The Jedi are true protectors of peace and justice here. The first books will debut at Star Wars Celebration 2020 in August with Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi.
What Does This Mean For Star Wars?
This looks a lot like the period of Star Wars between Return of the Jedi and Phantom Menace. That period was where we got the majority of our great extended universe content. Stories like the Thrawn trilogy, Shadows of the Empire, and many more were created then. Speaking of Shadows of the Empire, it feels like this could be similar to that. LucasFilm set forth to do everything involved with a Star Wars film, except make the film there. We could see new lines of toys, comics, video games, and more from this new High Republic era.
Quite frankly, I’m very excited about this. You should be too! Anyone who was expecting Project Luminous to be an announcement of a new movie or show was thinking a bit too high. The writing was on the wall for this to be a smaller venture from LucasFilm. We’ll learn more about the overall project later on.
