Onward has not hit the big screen yet, but that is not stopping it from making headlines. Disney and Pixar’s newest animated film will be the first Disney movie to have a confirmed animated gay character.
Onward’s openly animated LGBTG character
This Onward character, a purple cyclops, who is a lesbian police officer named Officer Specter and is voiced by comedian and actress Lena Waithe. Officer Specter references her girlfriend when she pulls over a driver.
“My girlfriend’s daughter got me pulling my hair out,” said Officer Specter according from Onward early screening reports from Yahoo Entertainment. In a interview with Onward producer Kori Rae, she tells Yahoo Entertainment “It just kind of happened. The scene was kind of fitting and it opens up the world a little bit and that’s what we wanted.”
In the past
While in the past people have speculated that there have been several gay animated characters in Disney films. Such-as Elsa from Frozen and LeFoue in the Beauty and the Beast, but Disney has never confirmed it. Now, Disney has featured a few LGBTQ characters in their live-action films Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and in Marvel’s Avengers: End Game.
Onward in theaters soon
Onward stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt who are brothers and embark on a quest to resurrect their father for a day. This film will hit theaters on March 6th.
