Lilo & Stitch, the much beloved 2002 animated film from Disney, is moving foward in its live-action iteration. The news comes from DisInsider editor and chief Skylar Shuler.
Disney Plus Exclusive Release
In 2018 there were talks of a live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch. Disney is now using its new digital platform, Disney+ to bring the project to fruition. Per reports, the new film will be released exclusively on the Disney+ streaming service.
Stitch Returns!
There is good news for Stitch fans. The original voice for the loveable alien, Chris Sanders, will be reprising his role as Experiment 626. The new film is still searching for a director, but will be produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich who produced the successful live-action Aladdin adapation.
Lilo and Stitch Live-Action/CGI Mix
The new film will begin shooting this Fall in an undisclosed part of Hawaii. The DisInsider also reports that this adaption will be a mix of CGI and live-action. If you are wondering how that may look, refer back to The Jungle Book directed by Jon Favreau. The film will reportedly receive a budget similar to that of the Lady and the Tramp Disney+ release. That film received a budget of $60 million.
Lilo & Stitch is one of my personal favorite Disney movies so I am thrilled to hear this news. I can already imagine what one of the most adorable characters in Disney history will look like live-action, even if it is CGI. Let’s hope this project moves along with no hiccups. I’m ready to see the duo on the screen together again soon!
