Back in January, Netflix released a couple interesting video narrations of behind-the-scenes on The Witcher, narrated by Geralt of Rivia himself, Henry Cavill. It you’ve ever wondered how they make these amazing fight scenes, check out the videos below.
Henry Cavill: I Live by the Sword
I’ve swung a sword once or twice, and the balance is key to any long weapon. Having to do a choreographed fight scene with a partial sword that has to look like it’s full length is extremely difficult. Hats off to Henry Cavill, Emma Appleton, The stunt crew, and the fight choreography crew. This is some of the best-looking brutal sword fighting I’ve seen on film.
The Renfri Fight Scene: Shot by Shot
The fight with Renfri (Shrike from the books) is a pivotal moment for our Witcher for the rest of the story. Based on Cavill’s description of how much training and effort went into this one monumental scene, I’m hopeful for Season 2. Actors putting that much effort into their craft always translates on-screen for the fans. Amazing that it was filmed in just one take!
The Witcher reads The Witcher!
Another cool video released back in December has Cavill reading a segment of the book, The Last Wish, introducing The Witcher by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
As of now, there are eight Witcher books. If you’re interested in reading the stories that started it all, here’s the order you need to read them in.
The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny, Season of Storms, Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and finally The Lady of the Lake.
Season of Storms is the odd-ball. It’s told as an add-on to The Last Wish. You could skip it if you just want continuity. However, it does offer some back story within the story that fans will definitely like and sprinkles some previews of things to come in the following books.
Season 2 of The Witcher is filming! Read it here.
Season 2 is expected to drop in 2021. For now, the books and the games are all we have to carry on Geralt’s story. Check out the Witcher page on Netflix for the official word on Season 2.
