With the success of The Mandalorian and the popularity of the not even released Obi-Wan Kenobi series one has to think why hasn’t something like this been done in the past. Well we have learned that it was thought of but never made it to the cable box.
Star Wars Underworld
Just image a time in Star Wars right after Order 66. People on Courusant still confused about what happen with the Jedi. Then image the rebellion hiding from the Empire in the lower levels on Courusant (The Underworld) trying to survive. If you did all that then you got what the show seemed to be about. And as you can see in the footage below it just about happened.
Why didn’t it happen?
This Underworld series was first talked about in 2005 and then put on hold in 2010 because of financial reasons. The test footage above was produced by Stargate Studios. And according to an article in 2011 from movieweb.com George Lucas himself had this to say:
“It sits on the shelf, we have 50 hours. We are trying to figure out a different way of making movies. We are looking for a different technology that we can use, that will make it economically feasible to shoot the show. Right now, it looks like the Star Wars features. But we have to figure out how to make it at about a tenth of the cost of the features, because it’s television. We are working toward that, and we continue to work towards that.
Will we ever see anything like it?
Even though some of the footage was kind of rough, and that is expected from test footage, it definitely had some potential to be great. Also reported from movieweb.com there was supposed to be a two-part story arc that would of involved Darth Vader. It would of had him going to the Underworld to personally quell a rebellion.
Yeah that would of been a great story to tell. But at least we got a few things that was supposed to come from this series. Those would be in Rogue One with the Rebels getting the Death Star plans and in Solo with Han Solo winning the Millennium Falcon.
We want to hear from you
What are your thoughts about the Star Wars: Underworld that never happened? Do you think we will ever get an Underworld story. But even if we don’t as Star Wars fans we have a lot to look forward to, like the Obi-Wan series, the new Star Wars comics and whatever Project Luminous is.
