There is good news for Captain Marvel fans: Marvel Studios has announced that it has green-lit Captain Marvel 2 for production. News of the production moving forward does not come without its own set of complications though. It seems detractors are at it again. There are many fans who love Brie Larson as the super powerful, high flying hero that she is. There are also, however, many others who believe she should step away from her role as the Captain.
As CinemaBlend reports, there is a new petition regarding the film’s star. This time the call to action is to have Brie Larson removed from Captain Marvel 2, and from portraying Captain Marvel all together.
Petition to Remove Brie Larson from Captain Marvel 2
We need Brie Larson to step down from her role to prove she is an ally of social justice and ensure a gay woman of color plays the role. Let Monica, the original female & BLACK Captain Marvel instead of white-washing characters for the benefit of the straight, white men running Disney.” The petition ends saying, “She hasn’t donated money to any charity other than The Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation and it’s time for her to show she is not all-talk.”
The petition, which you can find at www.care2.com, is now at over 28,000 signatures. While 28,000 signatures may seem like a lot, don’t be too worried. Captain Marvel opened in theaters March 8, 2019 in the U.S. and grossed over 1.1 billion dollars worldwide. It’s not hard to see why Disney and Marvel Studios would decide to pull the trigger on Captain Marvel 2. (Here are some sequels we’d actually like to see.) It’s a no-brainer, even with a petition that has garnered so many signatures to have Larson removed as the titular role.
Marvel moves forward
Despite the challenges the new Captain Marvel movie may be facing that is not stopping Marvel from moving forward. As of now there is no specific release date yet for the MCU film. Notwithstanding, Captain Marvel 2 will seemingly be released in 2022. It’s also rumored take place in the present day. The film has also brought on Megan McDonnell to write the script for the film. McDonnell is a staff writer for the upcoming Disney Plus series WandaVision. The co-directors of the first installment, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, are reportedly not returning to write or direct the sequel. It seems as though Marvel may still be eyeing to bring on a female director to helm the upcoming movie.
Regardless of the controversy surrounding Captain Marvel 2 and Brie Larson, I have no doubt that Marvel will do everything to make sure this film is a success and a box office hit. I cannot wait to see Carol Danvers hit the big screen again and be the high-flying, glow-fist punching hero we deserve. I’ll be ready with my ticket come 2022, and I have a feeling millions of other Marvel fans will too.
