Despite the bad reviews and toxic fandom STAR WARS: The Rise of Skywalker looks like it is not doing too bad at the box office. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter The Rise of Skywalker has hit the $1 Billion dollar mark just 28 days after it’s release.
Star Wars adds to the 2019 billion-dollar movie list
After earning $481.3 million domestically and $519.7 Million internationally, The Rise of Skywalker becomes Disney’s seventh 2019 film to hit the billion-dollar mark, breaking its previous record of four in 2016. Here is the list in order of the Disney 2019 billion-dollar club:
- Avenger: Endgame – $2.7 billion
- The Lion King – $1.6 billion
- Frozen 2 – $1.3 billion
- Captain Marvel – $1.1 billion
- Toy Story 4 $1.07 billion
- Aladdin – $1.05 billion
- STAR WARS: The Rise of Skywalker – 1.001 billion
The Rise of Skywalker vs The Last Jedi
What is interesting is how The Rise or Skywalker and The Last Jedi look compared to each other. Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi made $1.33 billion globally and at the time became one of the most hated Star Wars films of all times. The Rise of Skywalker according to analyst projections will see about $1.2 billion when all is done.
What is Star Wars future?
So, what is the future? I mean a billion dollars isn’t a bad number to hit, but still it seems that a lot of fans just are not happy, and have given up on the franchise. Will this little break from Star Wars movies be what the fans and Disney need to reset? Or is the future no longer the big screen? Has Disney+ shown us after The Mandalorian the future is made for TV shows? It is hard to tell but whatever we should be thankful for the Star Wars content that we are getting, I mean it’s better than nothing right?
