Scott Derrickson the director of the original Doctor Strange film, has dropped out of the sequel. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness is now left without a director for the time being. Derrickson, who led the original film, is staying on as an executive producer on the project. Derrickson left the film due to what is becoming the norm in today’s Marvel. Creative differences. Variety is reporting not only on the departure but that the film is still on track for its May 2020 shooting schedule.
What This Means For Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness is going to be a first for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is going to star Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. In a surprising tone for a Marvel film, it’s supposedly going to have horror themes throughout the film.
“Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU.”
Marvel’s Statement About the Loss of Derrickson
The studio didn’t have word on who a replacement would be. I’m hopeful about this one. Although it’s bad for a film to lose its director, this one could lead to a better creative product. A search for a new director is currently underway. Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness is coming to theaters May 7, 2021.
Doctor Strange was a runaway hit for Marvel Studios when it released in 2016. The sequel has quite a bit more hype behind it now. So let’s hope this loss doesn’t derail the film completely.

Was this actually unexpected, though? At best, people reacted with a “yay?” when Derrickson was announced as the sequel’s director. He’s far from a fan-favorite director, is what I’m saying. I’m glad he’s gone.
I don’t want to sound like a douchebag, but I’m honestly hyped for this movie now. While it’s true that Doctor Strange was the last victim of Ike Perlmutter, the movie was still a turd that only floated because the cast was out of this world. How did Kevin Feige convince the likes of Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mads Mikkelsen to star in that movie? I have no idea but in Feige We Trust, because that script and directing and editing were steaming crap.
I know Marvel Studios/Disney won’t get a director like Guillermo del Toro, but it’d be nice if they at least got a newcomer with great ideas like they did with Chloe Zhao (so hyped for The Eternals!). And don’t forget the script, man. Get someone like Neil Gaiman or the ghost of Le Guin to type that up. The cast deserves all the praise for squeezing what they could out of that shitty script.
Doctor Strange is one of my favorites ever. Dude has an amazing lore and supporting cast. I hope this sequel shows just how awesome his lil corner of the MCU can be.
It’ll never happen but god I’d love it if they hired a director like Park Chan-wook for this.
