Was the reason for Carrie Fisher’s appearance in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker only because of unused footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
Carrie Fisher is dead. Yet, she is was in Rise of Skywalker quite a bit. Her character, General Leia Organa, even embraces another character. That’s besides wearing different outfits.
Lucasfilm/Disney claimed that Fisher was going to be in the film just because of the utilization of unused footage of Fisher from The Force Awakens. But there’s the amount of footage of Fisher…. Fisher’s physical contact with another character (she hugs Rey) and the different outfits.
I’m dubious.
Lucasfilm did not return a request for comment about whether Carrie Fisher was in Rise of Skywalker for at least one other reason besides unused footage of her from The Force Awakens.
It seems clear that computer-generated imagery was also used to produce Leia in Rise of Skywalker. But Lucasfilm said in Jan. 2017 that it wouldn’t use CGI to re-create Fisher:
We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa. Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to ‘Star Wars.’”
So did Lucasfilm violate that pledge?
In short words, yes, they did. This is besides the fact that a CGI Leia did appear in the film. So, this whole article could be about the fact that Lucasfilm did indeed break its promise.
The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams said this in an official statement in July 2018 about using Fisher footage: “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in ‘Episode IX’ by using unseen footage we shot together in ‘Episode VII.’”
What did you think about Carrie Fisher’s role in The Rise of Skywalker? Let us know in the comments below!
You are a bunch of lying sacks of shit. It was very obvious that it was NOT CGI but unseen footage taken before Fisher’s death that was artfully woven into the script of Rise of Skywalker. Shame on you for trying to sensationalize it!
John, thanks for the colorful comment. You’re wrong, of course. Most of Leia’s scenes did feature unused footage… but in criticizing the article you conveniently ignore the fact The Rise of Skywalker DID utilize a CGI Leia – a young Leia in training with Luke Skywalker. That use mean that Disney wasn’t exactly truthful when it said it wouldn’t use CGI for Leia’s scenes in the film.
I think they shot 8 an 9 simultaneously. In Carrie’s biography she says worked with JJ.twice. He said so to Steph3n Colbert. There is nothing in this movie that would have made sense in the last.
That is debatable. They used the CGI all right, but in a way they would have used it in any sort of context where “deoldification” was needed. I, personally, wouldn’t count that one as a breach of promise. They did not CGI’d her in her older age. I know that it is borderline hypocrisy, but somehow (for me at least) it makes a difference.
You’re an absolute twat! The scene where she embraces Rey was reused from TFA. Ok, they did alter her clothing, hair and Jewellery but apart from that it was pretty evident that this was real footage! You just sound like the biggest cock head on the planet right now!
Food for thought, “James” – There was ANOTHER scene in The Rise of Skywalker in which they completely recreated the Leia character using CGI. Ignoring that fact, and disparaging one of our writers, just might put YOU in line ahead of our author for sounding like the biggest… well you get the point.
Look, if you want to criticize and comment on an article, we not only welcome it, we encourage it. We are always happy to engage in reasoned discourse with our readers. But… keep it clean, man. Resorting to obscenities and name-calling only lessens any argument you can make… especially in this case where you ignore facts of the film to make a misguided point.
jag tycker att Star Wars movie är bra faktiskt eftersom det är värd att se faktiskt! förut om Boba fett åcksa faktiskt! och Lea organa som prinsessa Lea!
