After initially deciding not to push for a campaign for Robert Downey Jr. to get an Oscar nomination. Disney is going forward with it. Avengers: Endgame broke box office records (and frankly, my heart). At the heart of it, was Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark. Disney’s official list of considerations for awards goes deeper than Downey Jr. however. The major thing about this is that it’s not for a “Best Actor” award. It’s for “best Supporting Actor”.
This may be a surprise to some after Downey Jr. rebuffed the claim for an Oscar earlier this year. In an interview for the Howard Stern Show, he said “There was some talk about it, and I said, let’s not.” Downey Jr. hasn’t spoken about it since this news has come out. In addition to Downey Jr., the other members of the cast are also receiving bids for awards. These include: Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, Brie Larson, and more.
I feel like Downey Jr. deserves at least a nomination for his work as Tony Stark. Without him at the helm, the MCU wouldn’t be what it is today. Martin Scorsese can blow his horn about how the films aren’t cinema, but go re-watch Avengers: Endgame and tell me that film doesn’t make you feel something. That’s a whole new article about how I feel on that subject, but for now, we can celebrate and hope that RDJ gets recognized for his hard work as the character of Tony Stark.
