For at least one more movie, Spider-Man will remain with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony and Marvel Studios reached an agreement on the popular character. Announced earlier this morning, Kevin Feige, producer for all of the MCU’s movies, will oversee at least one more Spider-Man film. Tom Holland will be reprising his role as Peter Parker. The deal also mentions that Spider-Man will make an appearance in one other Marvel film. Kevin Feige had this to say about it: “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,”.
This comes off the heels of news that Marvel would not be producing any more Spider-Man films. The past two Spider-Man films, Homecoming, and Far From Home were very fruitful for both parties at the box office. With Far From Home being Sony’s highest grossing film ever. The partnership seems like it’ll be similar to their last one, with a split in box office revenue and Marvel getting the rights to merchandise.
What’s Next For Sony and Marvel Spidey
With the MCU being a separate film universe from Sony’s Spider-Man universe, it creates problems. Sony is producing at least three Spider-Man universe films in Morbius (in Post-production), Venom 2, and the just announced Madame Web. This means that Sony won’t be simply relinquishing the Spider-Man license to Marvel anytime soon. This deal is great for everyone involved. Fans get to see Spider-Man in the MCU. Tom Holland might appear in Sony’s universe now. The new Spider-Man film even has a release date of July 16th, 2021. Spider-Man is the most popular character in Marvel Comics, so it’s great that he gets to stick around.
