It looks like fans will be able to visit the galaxy far, far away in all its high resolution, box set glory after all. According to reports, Disney is in fact developing a full, nine-film Skywalker saga box set for 2020. Better yet? That offering will come in the highest resolution available. Get ready for 4K Star Wars.

Before that, however, each of the existing Skywalker saga films is getting a Blu-ray re-issue with new artwork. The hopes are that the re-issue is merely a sign of things to come, namely a box set of the entire saga. The website thedigitalfix.com reported several months ago that a 4K Star Wars Blu-ray box set was in the works. Citing an anonymous Disney source, the site provided some details about the possibility back in April. According to that source:

4K masters of the original trilogy and of The Force Awakens are all in the can and work is currently being done on the prequel trilogy which is proving to actually be more of a challenge than the original films.

4K Star Wars box set coming to Blu-ray in 2020

There have been multiple iterations of Star Wars box sets over the years, including the six-film (then) complete saga on Blu-ray. Fans are sure to be excited about the original trilogy being remastered for a 4k Star Wars Blu-ray release. Thus far, only The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story are available in the top-tier, Blu-ray format.

We now expect that Disney and Lucasfilm will make the official announcement in two-weeks’ time at Disney’s D23 Expo 2019 in Anaheim. Of course, a 4K Star Wars box set release will inevitably beg the question: Will we ever see the theatrical cuts of the original trilogy on Blu-ray, let alone in 4K?

Fans received a new hope for that prospect during a Hollywood double-feature of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the 70mm print of the original Star Wars. Thus, the original cut of the 1977 classic film does exist.  Hopefully we’ll get a huge, and very welcome, surprise at D23 with an announcement of its including with the 4K Star Wars box set. Time will tell.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrives in theaters December 20, 2019. Expect the 4K Star Wars box set sometime in 2020.
