The end of season five and the beginning of season six confirmed that Agent Phil Coulson (played by Clark Gregg) had passed. The fallout of which the remaining members of SHIELD had to deal with. What made this transition even harder was the introduction of Sarge, a character who is seemingly only similar to Phil Coulson in looks.

“It felt scary but in a good way,” Clark Gregg on playing Sarge. “My temptation as an actor is to try to find a way to get to a relax, creative space. But some of that stuff, to do it you have to keep it so you don’t know quite what’s going to happen. They wouldn’t tell me too much. They didn’t tell me the things I would normally think were the baseline things I needed to play a character, and that felt additionally jarring. But there was just something about the different attitude this guy had. His relentlessness that really felt like a freeing change from the kind of careful heart-driven Phil Coulson.”

Sarge’s Squad

With the addition of Sarge comes his new team: Jaco The Giant (Winston James Francis), Snowflake (Brooke Williams), and Pax (Matt O’Leary). While Sarge’s Squad hasn’t been around for long, the question of whether or not a spin-off show would work came up during the Agents of SHIELD round table interviews.

Sarge and his squad from Agents of SHIELD season six

Sure, why not. I mean, I love his team. I love Sarge’s team. I love Jaco the Giant, I love Snowflake. I think the second episode, where he comes out of the convenience store, puts his gun on his back. His team follows him sort of slowmo. I thought: We’re going to be okay. Because it’s a big risk to take Coulson and turn him into this other guy but we thought these are interesting people. This is going to be cool.
