With Captain Marvel scoring big in theaters, it’s no wonder that her successor Ms. Marvel may be on her way. Though there’s been no official word, Kevin Feige has previously expressed an interest in adding Kamala Khan. Now, actress and screenwriter Mindy Kaling has added more fuel to the fire.
In an interview with MTV News, Kaling admitted that she has brought up the character of Ms. Marvel to studio executives. According to the star of Late Night, they are onboard – and she might even be involved down the line.
I think the people I’ve spoken to Marvel about it are so excited about the character, and I think that they’re trying to figure out what to do with it. And I told them I would help in any way, because I truly love her.”
Ms. Marvel Plans Still In Process
Though fans usually have several big names in mind when a new character is mentioned, Kaling did not offer one. When asked who should play Kamala Khan, she replied, “You know, I feel it might need to be an unknown.” Given the lack of representation when it comes to Pakistani-American actresses onscreen, that makes perfect sense.
She was confident that Marvel would push ahead with some kind of Ms. Marvel project, perhaps through Disney+. “Now that there’s this streaming platform with them, it might be something like that,” she explained. “But I think they understand how much excitement there is.”
She clarified her statements on Twitter, denying that she knew any specifics about any upcoming adaptation. If there is one, though, she’s sure it’ll be a hit:
Considering that Feige brought up the desire to see Ms. Marvel, we’re certain she’s not far behind. As the producer himself said, “We wanted to get Captain Marvel out there first so that there is something for a young Muslim girl to get inspired by.”
