When the first openly gay character in the entire MCU first appeared in Avengers: Endgame, played by co-director Joe Russo no less, there was a lot of talk about why that representation had taken so long to arrive and why it was so minimal.
IT was certainly nice to see Captain America (Chris Evans) be so accepting of someone else’s sexuality and treat it as normal. Many audience members, however, were clamoring for something more substantial. Eleven years and twenty-two movies is a long time to go without having a single significant LGBT character or relationship. But… it seems all that is about to change for the better.
In an interview that aired on Entertainment Weekly’s EW Morning Live, director Joe Russo talked about about his cameo in the latest MCU film and the reaction to it. He also dropped a pretty big bombshell. Apparently an already established character will come out as gay in a future film.

When referring to his character as the first “openly gay” one in MCU’s history, he also acknowledged that there had been previous insinuations about named characters in the universe as well. Upon asked who else was gay, though, he accidentally let a little more slip when he said, “Uhhh… We’re gonna find out!”
Anthony Russo was also on hand for the interview. He defused the situation by adding, “That’s a story for another day”. Nevertheless, his brother still had a little more information to give.
There is a gay character coming up in one of their films,” Joe confirmed. “And I think Kevin will make that announcement, I’m sure pretty soon.”
Valkyrie is the most likely option, given that Tessa Thompson seemed sure of her character’s bisexuality before Thor: Ragnarok came out. Notwithstanding, there’s also the possibility that Captain Marvel will come out as a lesbian. After all, a good portion of the fandom has collectively championed her as one.
