Showtime is ramping up for a summer start to production on their Penny Dreadful follow up, City of Angels, and, it seems, that there will be at least one familiar face among the cast of the new series as Rory Kinnear has inked a deal to return.
For 3 seasons, Kinnear played John Clare, aka Caliban, aka the Creature, the first creation of Victor Frankenstein. When last seen, the Creature was reciting an ode of William Wordsworth’s at the grave of Eva Green’s Vanessa Ives. Many fans felt that with Ives dead, the series must end and so it did, but it seems that the immortal Creature will be the bridge to City of Angels.
Set in Los Angeles in 1938, City of Angels explores a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, the new series will explore a mix of the supernatural and the reality of the time period. The series will focus on Santiago, an LA cop who has a connection to Santa Muerte, the angel of holy death. Details as to how Kinnear’s Creature is tied to the season’s plot were not revealed, but he will now be going by the name Peter Craft.
Additionally, Showtime is hoping to land Nathan Lane as another of the series’ leads, Charlton Townsend. Townsend is described as the ruthless chairman of the transportation committee and a city councilman who finds himself at the center of the city’s racial divide. At the time of publication, Lane had not yet agreed to terms with the network.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels from writer John Logan, will film this summer in Los Angeles. Stay tuned to That Hashtag Show for more on this story as it develops.
