There’s not a whole lot we know just yet about Saru’s history or the Predator his people are prey for. The new Short Trek episode ‘Brightest Star’ will reveal more about where Saru came from and his homeworld, Kaminar. The trailer begins with an ominous VO from Saru:

When my people look up at the stars, they see only death.

This episode can also serve to clean up some canon. While Saru has talked about where he came from in Discovery, the planet’s name hasn’t been mentioned on the show. However, in the book Desperate Hours it’s called Kelpia while in Fear Itself it’s Kaminar. The show appears to be going with Kaminar, confirmed by the episode’s logline:

Before he was the first Kelpien to join StarfleetSaru lived a simple life on his home planet of Kaminar with his father and sister. Young Saru, full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path.

I’m excited to get more backstory on Saru, on his people, and his planet. As Kelpiens are a new species to the universe, we don’t know much about them yet. Is Saru the last one? Are there more out there that haven’t joined the federation? What does their predator look like? What kind of creature is it? I don’t know if all these will be answered in the short 15 minute episode, but at least a few will be I’m sure.

Brightest Star is the third installment of the Short Treks series and releases on December 8th, 2018. The previous episode, Calypso was released on November 6th, and the fourth, titled Escape Artist, will see the return of Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd and drops on January 3rd, 2019.
