One of the details reported in Henry Cavill’s departure from the role of Superman was a planned cameo in Shazam! (The Hollywood Reporter).  More news has come out describing what that appearance would have looked like.  Shazam! hits theaters April 5, 2019.

Rumors that Warner Bros has been building a DC Cinematic Universe go back as far as 2011’s Green Lantern.  After its lackluster performance, the studio did not try again until 2013’s Man of Steel.  With the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, and Justice League, Warner Bros finally has its universe.

2019’s Shazam! was supposed to grow that universe with a cameo by Superman.  The two characters have a long history together, often battling each other for one reason or another.  With their powers so similar, fans like to debate who would win in a fight.

The scene Cavill would have appeared in is much more subdued than the fist-fight fans might have been hoping for.  The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzales reported, “the Superman cameo in Shazam! was supposed to be Clark at the end of the movie meeting with Billy Batson, the kid who [turns into] Shazam, telling him ‘Hey, we’re gonna keep an eye on you,’ that kind of thing.”

Neither Cavill or his spokespeople have given a definitive statement on his status as the Man of Steel.  The star posted a video on Instagram of himself lifting a Superman figure into frame. To complete the bizarre scene, Cavill wore a “Krypton Lifting Team” t-shirt while The Blue Danube played in the background. The video was captioned with “Today was exciting #Superman.”

One of his spokespeople also tweeted, “Be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet. @wbpictures has been and continues to be our partners as they evolve the DC Universe. Anticipate a WB statement later today.”

The Warner Bros statement was also vague, saying, “We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged. Additionally, we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films.”

While Cavill could return to the role, he will not be in Shazam!  Batman is another character that could appear but is unlikely to.  Rumors are flying that Warner Bros is looking to recast the Caped Crusader for his upcoming solo film.  A last minute cameo by Wonder Woman or Aquaman have not been ruled out.
