Yes indeed, the original Lando Calrissian is back to don the cape once more. Billy Dee Williams is making his long awaited return to the Star Wars universe and we couldn’t be happier. So what does JJ Abrams and company have tucked up this scoundrel’s sleeve for Episode IX? Here’s what we’ve got for you…

Although this is the return of Williams in the role, the character was brilliantly reprised earlier this year by Donald Glover in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story.’ With this reprisal came some interesting new facts about the character and a few cleverly placed plot points.

Lando had a sidekick well before Lobot or Nien Nunb, her name was L3-37, a witty firecracker of droid. Unfortunately, L3 never made it out of the film alive… not in the same physical form anyway.

In addition to her keen wit, she contained one of the most advanced navigation systems in the universe within her programming. After taking a fatal blow during the battle on Kessel, she was fused into the Falcon. Part of her consciousness was uploaded into the famed ship, helping the Millennium Falcom become one of the most famous crafts in the galaxy. So, while we are excited for Calrissian’s reunions with Leia and Chewbacca, his most interesting relationship was with L3.

Since the release of ‘Solo’, various members of the creative team have verified that Lando is indeed a pansexual. Why go out of their way to make that fact clear?
It’s obvious that Han loved the Falcon more than his own wife and son, now we know why… it really is a very special ship in more ways than one, she’s sentient! Consider this statement by C3P0 to Han in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’:

“I don’t know where your ship learned to communicate, but it has the most peculiar dialect.” –  C-3P0 from Empire Strikes Back

In ‘Solo A Star Wars Story’, we got more than one origin story. The anthology perfectly sets up several amazing possibilities for the future of the Star Wars franchise and Episode IX will certainly bring us a new dimension of the Millennium Falcon and Lando Calrissian.
