RUMOR: Could Ewan McGregor be reprising his role as Obi-Wan for Star Wars: Episode IX?

There are plenty of rumors flying around regarding the Star Wars saga, from possible stand-alone movies to characters showing up in future main trilogy movies. Once such rumor for the upcoming untitled Episode IX Star Wars movie, is a possible return for Ewan McGregor to his famous Obi-Wan role.

We all know the rumor that a possible anthology film, (not officially confirmed among rumors of stand-alone’s being halted for awhile), starring Obi-Wan, and possibly Ewan McGregor reprising his role for that as well, but a new rumor suggests that Obi-Wan Kenobi could make an appearance in the next movie of the Skywalker saga. A british tabloid, so take it with a grain of salt, suggests that McGregor will be “secretly” filming for the conclusion of the current trilogy. But of course, rumors are exactly that, rumors, and they probably become false reports as much as reality.

But that being said, the appearance of Obi-Wan Kenobi would be an exciting addition to the last installment of the current Star Wars trilogy. In what capacity that means, or how big his role in the next movie would be, is clearly up to wide speculation. Could he possibly be taking Luke’s place as her mentor and guiding her in her training of the force, taking her on as another of his apprentices. Of course we all know that his last padawan didn’t exactly turn out as he had hoped. Or could he possibly be, as a very quiet fan theory has suggested, be her father? We clearly know that certain things were left unanswered in TLJ, but could those questions be answered in the next movie, especially the question of who Rey’s parents actually were?

And this could be a very good thing for the series, which to say the least is suffering from the ire of some of it’s die hard “fans”, especially considering when Disney first announced that they would be making stand-alone films, a huge part of the fan base voiced their desire to see an Obi-Wan Kenobi film. And while that desire still holds strong today, and we are hanging on the cusp of hearing whether or not an anthology film based on the old hermit is actually happening, seeing him in Episode IX could lead to an actual film based on his character being officially made.

And while other rumors about the next installment in the main saga are circulating, including Billy Dee Williams reprising his role as the scoundrel Lando Calrissian, the character Grand Admiral Thrawn being introduced to the new cannon, and actresses possibly being hired for roles as Mara Jade Skywalker and Rey’s daughter, could this be the rumor that fans want the most to be true? Do you want to see Obi-Wan Kenobi/Ewan McGregor in Episode IX? Or are you still holding out hope for a stand-alone instead? Or call me crazy, both of these things happening?

The opinions of the Star Wars fan base are strong indeed, and rumors always create discussions full of theories and ideas, so I’m curious to see what everyone thinks. Obi-Wan Kenobi is a huge fan favorite character, and it’s hard to think that him showing up in any capacity, would be a welcome addition to the current Star Wars films that are, or may be, coming out.
