Presumably as part of Marvel’s marketing, deleted scenes from Avengers: Endgame are showing up online. One of those scenes shows all the MCU superheroes paying tribute to the fallen Tony Stark. The scene takes place immediately after Tony Stark sacrifices himself in the final battle against Thanos. In the theatrical version, the scene simply cuts to the characters getting back to their lives post “Blip”.

Why was the scene cut?

The deleted scene, while a touching moment, is way too similar to the funeral we see briefly after that battle. Ultimately this lead to the Russo brothers removing the scene all together.  Here is what they had to say on the scene themselves:

“It’s a beautiful scene with moving performances, but we filmed it prior to Tony Stark’s funeral. The funeral scene ultimately became a more resonant and emotional reflection on Tony’s death for us.”

– Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame director’s commentary

Check out the deleted scenes posted on YouTube posted by We Got This Covered. The tribute scene starts at the 3:30 mark in the video.

More deleted goodness!

The deleted scene also solves a bit of a mystery that fans had.  Although at the end of Avengers: Endgame when we see Peter Quill aboard the Benatar trying to locate Gamora, we didn’t know if she actually survived the snap.  The deleted scenes clears that up, as we see Gamora running away at the exact point all the heroes are taking a knee.

If you don’t want to shell out the $20 for the digital version or the money for the Bluray, keep in mind it is scheduled to be released on the Disney+ streaming service on Dec. 11. Disney’s streaming service launches in November and will cost $7 per month. However, only watching it on Disney+ doesn’t guarantee you get the extras like deleted scenes or director commentary.
