Well folks, Disney has made it official. With today’s announcement, we now know the schedule for Star Wars movies following Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Beginning with a (back to) normal pre-Christmas release, we’ll get new Star Wars films on the biennial beginning in 2022. (For the record, our own Ben Wolf pretty much called this one back in October.) The press release talks in general terms, noting that “three new as-yet-untitled Star Wars” films are forthcoming. So what is in store for the new Star Wars movies?
Honestly I think we already know exactly what’s coming by way of new Star Wars movies. Game of Thrones, or its production, at least, is over. That means showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are no free to focus on their new Star Wars trilogy. All indications we’ve seen thus far point to a whole new era of Star Wars on film: The Old Republic. Even Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the Old Republic subject matter was on the table.
Expect New Star Wars Movies to Showcase a Whole New Era
The Old Republic is something fans have been clamoring to see in new Star Wars movies for years. Characters like Darth Bane, Darth Revan and others have sat on the proverbial sidelines while the franchise focused on completing the forty-plus year Skywalker saga this year with Star Wars: Episode IX. Well, that saga will indeed come to end in December. And if rumors are true, Benioff and Weiss have already scheduled to begin production on their trilogy this October. Game of Thrones star Liam Cunningham is even rumored to be a part of it.
Some people are asking about the Rian Johnson trilogy and its timing. (We’ll report on that later. We can tell you now, however, that Johnson is currently tied up with his crime thriller Knives Out.) Suffice it to say that the first, new Star Wars movies will most likely come courtesy of Benioff and Weiss.
New Star Wars movies are coming. For many of us that’s the important take away here. Yes, we have to wait until 2022 now, but honestly that’s okay. If we finally get to see The Old Republic on film, with Benioff and Weiss at the helm? It will be well worth it.
