When it comes to the Star Wars prequels, fans are both divided, and vocal. The Phantom Menace is usually met with the same reaction across the fandom. Likewise with Revenge of the Sith, which is generally regarded as the best of the prequel trilogy. The writing was better, the tone was darker, and the film was simply more compelling. Fans can thank George Lucas for deleting a scene in which Anakin speaks droid for that. Otherwise, the film may have had a slightly more ridiculous feel to it.
A deleted scene in which Anakin speaks droid is making its way around the Internet. Movieweb tells us that, thanks to a Twitter user calling himself “Anakin”, you can see the clip in all its nineteen seconds of glory. The scene takes place after Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi crash land on the droid command ship to save the Chancellor. They communicate with Artoo, who is attempting to locate Palpatine. As they try to decipher what the droid said, well, see for yourself:
Anakin Speaks Droid in Episode III Deleted Scene
Keep in mind we’re talking about a prequel trilogy that gave us the likes of Jar Jar Binks. It’s amusing to know that a scene in which Anakin speaks droid is what it took for such silliness to make the cutting room floor. I’m sure it was originally meant to illustrate the importance of Jedi being able to communicate with their droids. Notwithstanding, it’s one thing for Jedi to understand droid-speak. But to have them actually speak it?
If nothing else it gives fans something new (or old, as the case may be), to chuckle at. It’s hard to believe, but this year marks twenty years since the prequals began with The Phantom Menace’s release. Star Wars Celebration will even feature an anniversary panel for that film. Hopefully Hayden Christensen will attend. If he does, I’ve got a crisp $20 bill to anyone who asks him “Can you tell me about the time when Anakin speaks droid?”
