When it comes to motion capture in fantasy and science fiction films, Andy Serkis is the master. (Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO, however, might find that answer, though not vague, still unconvincing.) He’s played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit films. The Planet of the Apes franchise enjoyed a bit of a revival at the hands of Serkis and his portrayal of Caesar. But it is his work in the Star Wars sequel trilogy as Supreme Leader Snoke that’s garnered some speculative discussion this past year.

Serkis recently spoke to Games Radar about his directorial debut with Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. (That film is now available on Netflix.) The conversation of course turned to Star Wars. Serkis was more than forthcoming with his feelings on Snoke meeting his demise in The Last Jedi.

“It was a bit of a shock. But I could see exactly why they were going that route,” said Serkis. “I think it was huge surprise in the middle of the film.” Of course, we know that The Last Jedi’s “huge surprise” factor was one of fans’ biggest criticisms of the film. It seems not even the actor playing Snoke was immune. “I just wish he’d survived, but who knows?”

Who knows, indeed. Serkis recently sparked speculation that Snoke would return when the actor pulled out of a convention appearance last minute. Actors tend to do that when they’re called for filming. If he did indeed film new shots for Star Wars: Episode IX as Snoke, he wasn’t saying. Whether the former Supreme Leader will return remains a mystery. Notwithstanding, we all thought Maul was dead after being sliced in half. Clearly that wasn’t the case.

Snoke

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Serkis, er, Plagueis the Wise?

Besides, what if some rumors are true and Snoke is actually Darth Plagueis? All bets could be off for his return in, and the direction of Episode IX. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
