HBO released a promo teaser for the eighth and final season of Game Of Thrones and while there’s no new footage of the upcoming season, there’s plenty of foreboding imagery.

The video features a table map of Westeros (you know, the one from Dragonstone) being consumed by fire and ice.

One by one, map markers of the prominent houses still left on the board (a dire wolf for House Stark, a dragon for House Targaryen and a lion for House Lannister) are taken over by fire and ice. The fire and ice creep closer and closer until they collide and a wall seemingly made of dragonglass arises out of the steam.

One could interpret the fire, ice and dragonglass merely just as evocative images from the series, with no underlying hints or clues to the outcome of the final season of the fantasy series but this is the internet. That’s not what we do here.

One of the obvious interpretations of the ice is that it symbolizes the White Walkers and their impending invasion of Westeros.

Another interpretation is that the collision of fire and ice could signal a potential conflict on the horizon between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. After all, it was finally confirmed in the season seven finale that Jon is actually a Targaryen and that Jon has a stronger claim to the Iron Throne than Daenerys Targaryen, Jon’s ally and new lover.

Game Of Thrones season eight is set to premiere in April 2019.
