“You deserve someone to show you mercy,” she tells a patient. But is Nurse Ratched’s brand of mercy something anyone would want?

Netflix released the first trailer for Ratched today. The Ryan Murphy produced series follows the origin story of psychiatric nurse Mildred Ratched. The nurse infamously tormented Randle McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Check out the trailer below for your first look at the series.

The series picks up in 1947 when Mildred Ratched (Sarah Paulson) takes a job at a leading psychiatric hospital. Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of a dedicated nurse. But as the hospital performs new and unsettling experiments on patients, her inner darkness grows.

Sarah Paulson as Nurse Mildred Ratched in Netflix's Ratched

Even with just this short look, it’s clear Sarah Paulson will deliver another incredible performance. Everything Nurse Ratched does is just a little bit off, and it works perfectly to put the audience on edge. The bright and colorful setpieces contrasting the underlying darkness of the series also gives it an unsettling feel.

And at the end of the day, I’m a sucker for a good villain origin story.

In short, this definitely looks like one to watch.

Don’t forget to book your appointment to Lucia State Hospital – Ratched hits Netflix September 18. Until then, check out some more first look photos here.
