It is official, I Know What You Did Last Summer has added Freddie Prinze Jr. to the cast. Deadline was first with the news this morning. The legacy sequel/requel to the 1997 slasher classic will see Prinze Jr. reprise his role as Ray Bronson from the 1997 and 1998 films. Jennifer Love Hewitt is also in talks to return and reprise her role. I Know What You Did Last Summer returns to theaters on July 18th, 2025. It also stars Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King.

Jennifer Katyin Robinson is directing the film and wrote the script with Sam Lansky. Leah McKendrick was the first writer on the film. Neal Moritz, who was a producer on the original film, is producing this reboot.

What Is I Know What You Did Last Summer About?

The first film grossed over $72 million at the box office in October 1997. The cast was filled with then-unknowns Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillipe, but each became sizeable stars after the film. It was a story about a friend group stalked by a villain with a hook after they tried to cover up hitting him with their car.

Kevin Williamson wrote the script for the original movie, which was based on a 1973 novel by Lois Duncan of the same name. This would be the fifth entry in the series after the original film, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, and the 2021 streaming series from Amazon.

It sure looks like they’re taking the same model used in Scream (2022) that brought back the legacy cast and mixed them up with a new crop of characters. Madelyn Cline stars in the Netflix series Outer Banks, and was in Rian Johnson’s smash hit Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
