Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson Talks Black Sabbath And A Surprisingly Good Album

Black Sabbath is one of the most influential and storied bands in rock and heavy metal history. They’ve had plenty of lead singers and sold millions of albums worldwide. Another singer who’s a big fan of Sabbath is Iron Maiden lead singer Bruce Dickinson. Bruce sat down for an interview with Quobuz on their YouTube channel. During the interview, Bruce had some choice words for Black Sabbath and several of their albums including a surprising choice.

Through the history of Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi has been the one constant. He’s influenced them stylistically and made plenty of personnel changes. During the interview with Bruce, he had major props for the 1973 album Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

“I was a kid and got this album, and I was still a virgin, which made me open it up and go, ‘Oh, my God. Look at those women.’ But what a great record. What a great album. What a great comeback album.”

Bruce went on to talk about the totality of Black Sabbath’s time with Ozzy in the ’70s.

“But, yeah, the first two records are amazing, Well, no, I mean, ‘Vol. 4’ was incredible as well. What a consistent band. And it’s Geezer and Tony. I mean, if you look at all the people, all the different vocalists, not just Ozzy, they’ve all been [great].”

One surprising choice he made when talking about some of his favorite albums was 1983’s Born Again.

“‘Born Again’ — great album. Everybody goes, ‘Oh, forget that one.’ No, it’s a great album.”

Born Again followed up the massively successful Ronnie James Dio era for Black Sabbath, with Ian Gillan joining the band. The album is a divisive one amongst rock and Black Sabbath fans because of its stylistic choices.

What Has Bruce Dickinson Been Up To Lately?

Bruce Dickinson is currently on the road with his solo band supporting his new album The Mandrake Project. That album was released earlier this year and is quite awesome. He’ll also be on tour with Iron Maiden doing the US leg of their The Future Past World Tour.

We recently sat down with Bruce to talk about The Mandrake Project, the comic tie-in, and his career. Check it out below!

So, do you think Bruce is right about Black Sabbath and specifically Born Again or is he wrong?
