February 24th, 2020 is when Star Wars fans will see the curtain lifted on the mysterious Project Luminous. What is it? The announcement will likely show the future direction of Disney’s Star Wars projects. Are we going back to the Old Republic past? Or are we going to all-new stories in the future?
Project Luminous: What We Know So Far…
We first told you about Project Luminous when Lucasfilm Publishing made the announcement at New York Comic-Con 2019. Those names and logos tell you exactly what this is going to be. A series of books and comic books that will do one of two things:
One direction will be going into the past. They can cherry-picking the EU, and build hype that will lead up to a new trilogy. This could be about the Old Republic, but who knows. There is a ton of backstory and lore all fans would love to see on the big screen, and perhaps that is going to start with these publications.
The other direction will go to the future, after The Rise of Skywalker. The Light and the Dark must be equal. You know, balance in the Force and whatnot. It appears Rey destroyed the Dark once and for all, but if biology class taught me anything, it’s that nature abhors a vacuum. The Dark will return, and the Light will need to rise and meet it.
The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things… Until….
NYCC2019 Announcement of Project Luminous
Warning! Total Fan Speculation Ahead!
Many fans think this is going to go back into Star Wars lore and plucking out things that will drive the next trilogy. I don’t think it goes back to the past. Trust me… Disney, without a doubt, is tired of hearing bellyaching fans about the old EU and how it should be brought back. I think they’re done with that line of thought. The only way the EU comes into play anymore is if they go Old Republic. A Revan movie would be sweet, but I don’t feel that’s the direction they’re going.
The word luminous is defined as full of or shedding light; bright or shining, especially in the dark. This writer thinks Project Luminous will be the resurrection of the Jedi Order after Rey, or something really close to it. This is going forward with new lore, not backward. Broom Boy needs someplace to develop his skills! Plus, every time we’ve seen something about this project, the Jedi symbol accompanies it. This is about re-establishing the Light in the wake of Palpatine’s nearly all-encompassing darkness from The Rise of Skywalker.

Look, I love the Skywalker saga as much as any fan, but it’s time to let the past die. Bury it with those lightsabers on Tattooine and let’s get some new material. Skywalker saga Easter eggs should pop up now and then in any new stories. That will excite the old nostalgic fans and give the new fans stories of their own to argue about in the future!
