There hasn’t been much talk lately about the status of WB and DC’s Black Adam movie. The last we heard, Dwayne Johnson had said the movie would start filming within the next year. At least now there is a report on who the studio is courted to direct the latest DC superhero flick.

Warner Bros. Courting Jaume Collet-Serra to Direct Black Adam

Fans know Jaume Collet-Serra best for directing films such as Non-Stop, The Shallow, Run All Night, and The Commuter. Warner Bros. and DC took notice, and they are now looking to him to direct Black Adam. (This report comes to us from the Observer.)

Variety has since corroborated the report and added on that Black Adam is a priority for both WB and New Line Cinema, since Shazam! was so successful.

Black Adam Was Supposed To Be In Shazam!

Black Adam; DC

Now, it was rumored for months before Shazam! had been released that Black Adam was supposed to be in the film. It did get confirmed later on that the character wouldn’t be in Shazam! because he was getting his own movie.

It was a little interesting to not see Black Adam in the film, because it would’ve set up a whole lot of interesting plot threats to be explored in either his film, another Shazam film, or both.

Black Adam Film Timeline

So last January, it was announced by THR that Black Adam was getting made into a movie. We also hear that Henry Gayden would be writing the script. The biggest part about this is that The Rock has been attached to this since 2008.

Hiram Garcia on the Film’s Status

It’s also worth noting that Hiram Garcia, who is producing the film ,had mentioned that the film is definitely still happening. And he went on to say:

We’re actually very deep into a script on it right now, which is coming along really well. I’m really excited with the story we’ve crafted. Look, I’ve always been a huge comic book fan. I’ve always had this dream, I’ve always wanted to—You know, you kind of have like these goals of like, ‘One day I’d love to be able to do this and this,’ and making a superhero movie was definitely always one of my dreams. For the longest time, you know you kind of have this living superhero in Dwayne Johnson, so I was always trying to figure out what’s the perfect character that will kind of fit him and his look and his build and his kind of edge and the attitude he’s got.

Garcia had also mentioned that:

So where we are now with Black Adam is we just got our latest script [from Adam Sztykiel]. We’re doing some revisions on it. We’re extremely excited about it, the studio’s very excited about it. And I’m telling you man, as a comic book fan, when this thing comes out, it is going to be amazing. This is the fanboy in me talking to you, it’s going to deliver on the goods of everything you’d want to see Black Adam do, he’s going to be doing in this film.

So this all means that the Black Adam film is on track to start production next year, but as all things in the film industry work, that could change.
