The Boys

Out with Bam, Biff, and Pow – In with Punch, F@#k, and Explode. Welcome to Amazon’s The Boys.

I counted a single F Bomb, an exploding head between thighs, and a lot of squinting and mugging in the new trailer for Amazon’s The Boys.  Based on the Garth Ennis comic of the same name, it’s up to Karl Urban and Jack Quaid to bring Billy Butcher and Hughie Campbell’s team of literal anti-heroes to life as they take on the Justice League-esk “The Seven”, heroes who have fallen pray to the trappings and indulgence of fame.

Amazon Delivers The Boys in all its R-Rated Glory

If you’ve read the comic series you know this trailer should be the tip of the iceberg for what’s coming from the twisted minds that brought us The Preacher and Sausage Party.  Evan Goldberg, Eric Kripke, and Seth Rogen have never been ones to shy away from “extreme” and the source material seems like fine hunting ground for these boys.

The Boys

I will say that while the trailer does a good job of showing off The Seven in all their debauchery, it seems light on the main characters that are up against these adversaries.

Although, not much is known beyond the premise for The Boys – A team of blue-collar vigilantes team up to police the so-called “superheroes” of this world with little more than dirty tactics, dirty words, and dirt. But in a fun twist, the lead character of “wee” Hughie Campbell’s is played by Simon Pegg – who is the person that Jack Quaid’s character is based on in the first place!

Full disclosure, I loved this comic when it first came out, but it defiantly petered off in story quality after a bit. While a fun romp with middle fingers to the concept of heroes, I hope the show can bring a stronger plot to it.

We’ll find out how bad/gory/delightful things will get for The Boys on July 26th when the 8 episodes run starts on Amazon.
