It looks like Star Wars is kicking 2019 off with some news about 2020. We don’t yet know much about the upcoming Rogue One spinoff series, but details are slowly emerging. We do know that it will debut on Disney’s streaming service, Disney+. Diego Luna will, of course, reprise his role as Cassian Andor. Lastly, we learned that Stephen Schiff will helm the series for Disney and Lucasfilm. A new report seems to indicate when the Cassian Andor series will premier, as well.

Several months ago Disney announced that it would produce a second, live-action Star Wars series in addition to Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian. The espionage thriller will follow the Rogue One spy as he works to gather intelligence for the Alliance. Filming for the Cassian Andor series is apparently slated for late 2019.

To be precise, “production is scheduled to commence in October 2019.” This information comes from cbr.com via this Production Weekly tweet:

So what does this mean as far as its release date goes? If The Mandalorian production schedule is any indication, Diego Luna might not return in the Cassian Andor series until the fall of 2020. Production on The Mandalorian also began in October (of 2018), and all indications are that it will hit the airwaves later this fall.

However, The Mandalorian is handcuffed by logistic complications that won’t hinder the Cassian Andor series. Namely, Disney is still building its technological infrastructure and content library for the yet-to-exist streaming service. Even if Pedro Pascal and company wrap filming on The Mandalorian tomorrow, it likely wouldn’t debut any sooner.

Star Wars in 2019
The Mandalorian and Cassian Andor are coming to Disney+

The Cassian Andor series, on the other hand, will have the benefit of Disney+ having already been up and running. By the time it’s ready, with any luck Disney will have worked out any kinks with the service. That could allow the show to premier shortly after it wraps production, if it does so sooner than the fall of 2020.

We’ll just have to wait and see. There will be plenty of Star Wars to keep our attention until the Cassian Andor series arrives. The Mandalorian and the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars hit the air this fall. And let’s not forget this other little film, Star Wars: Episode IX, coming this December.
