Disney’s High School Musical: The Musical is launching on Disney Play in 2019, and the lead character has been cast.
Joshua Bassett, who starred in Disney Channel’s “Stuck In The Middle”, and is in the upcoming Bravo crime anthology series “Dirty John,” has been cast as the lead star, Ricky.
Ricky is described as “a cynical but charming high school junior, who launches a bold plan to win his ex-girlfriend Nini back by auditioning to star opposite her in the school’s production of “‘High School Musical.’”
Gary Marsh, the president, and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, had this to say about Bassett’s interpretation of Ricky: “Joshua’s interpretation of the Ricky character was brilliant – funny, winning and, at the same time, uniquely vulnerable. The audience is going to love watching this charismatic young actor put his stamp on this next chapter of the ‘High School Musical’ franchise.”
The show will be filming in Salt Lake City, Utah as a single-camera docu-series style show. We know the show “follows a group of students at East High who stage a performance of “High School Musical” for their winter theater production, only to realize that as much drama happens offstage as onstage.” And every episode will have a song from one of the original movies, along with an original song for the show.
I’m so excited for the show to start filming soon, and the rest of the cast should be getting announced in the next couple of weeks. So you can stay tuned to That Hashtag Show for the latest information on High School Musical: The Musical.
