HOLY VINTAGE BATMOBILE BATMAN!
The Batmobile was reportedly spotted near the set of Todd Philip’s new upcoming Joker film. The project stars Joaquin Phoenix as a failed comedian named Arthur Fleck whose descent into madness and crime transforms him into the infamous Clown Prince of Crime.
A YouTube user by the name of THEMAJESTIRIUM1 uploaded a video titled “QUICK GLIMPSE OF CURRENT BATMOBILE BEING USED IN FILMING OF NEW JOKER MOVIE IN NEWARK NJ” that shows a 15-second clip of a Batmobile being transported on a flatbed truck.
If this news alone wasn’t confounding enough for a standalone film reportedly set in a world without a Caped Crusader, the fact the Batmobile in the video looks almost identical to the one driven in the Batman ’66 tv series is definitely enough to make you go, “Huh?”
The car in the clip looks a lot like the Lincoln Futura Batmobile from the Adam West television show with the most noticeable differences being a matte black paint job and a noticeable lack of a rocket thruster.
The clip doesn’t show the Batmobile being used in the film so there’s no telling how the vintage vehicle factors into a plot that supposedly doesn’t include a Batman/Bruce Wayne or if its indicative of the film’s time period.
The only connection that Todd Philips’ Joker film has to the classic Batmobile is that the look of Phoenix’s Joker appears to be most inspired by Cesar Romero’s Joker. It’s possible that the film is just aiming to include more subtle nods to the Batman ’66 series and perhaps other previous Batman adaptations. This makes the most sense for a standalone film that has no connection to the other DCEU films or Jared Leto’s Joker but still wants to give its audience something somewhat familiar to grasp onto.
Joker is scheduled to debut in theaters on October 4, 2019.
