The Arrowverse crossovers have always been massive, but this year’s event is shaping up to be Greg Berlanti’s DC universe’s biggest one yet. Ever since the announcement of Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman appearing in the crossover, fans have been dying to find out what this event will be about.
Last year, the Arrowverse adapted the Earth-X storyline with our heroes battling Nazi versions of themselves on Earth-X. The year before that, we saw the comic storyline Invasion! brought to life. So how can the Arrowverse top themselves after having fought off aliens and Nazi doppelgängers? The CW announced that this year’s 3-show event will be titled Elseworlds, which borrows from another major DC component.
But not only did we learn that; it was also announced by DC Comics that Designated Survivor’s LaMonica Garrett will be joining the crossover as one massive DC player, none other than The Monitor! Set to appear in all three episodes, this is how WBTV describes the CW’s version of the iconic character.
“Mar Novu, an extraterrestrial being of infinite power known as the Monitor.”
DC revealed that Monitor’s co-creator George Pérez is officially illustrating a sketch of what the DCTV version of Mar Novu will look like, given the significant role the character plays in this 3-part story. The Monitor is most likely the mysterious Lon-El character that That Hashtag Show exclusively revealed a couple of weeks ago. Monitor is a big deal given the connection he has with the famous DC storyline Crisis on Infinite Earths. Will we even see the Anti-Monitor appear in the crossover? Only time will tell.
With Elseworlds being the focus on this year’s crossover, it does appear that we’ll be exploring the Multiverse once again. For those who are not familiar with Elseworlds, it is a DC imprint that is disconnected from the main DC canon. In those spin-off stories, we had books such as Gotham by Gaslight where we found Batman fighting off Jack the Ripper in 1889. This book became the first story to kick-off the Elseworlds concept. Other famous storylines include Superman: Red Son, Kingdom Come, Superman: Secret identity as well as several Justice League stories.
It remains to be seen how the Elseworlds concept is applied to the Arrowverse, but do expect some Multiverse traveling. It has still not been revealed what Earth Ruby Rose’s Batwoman will be from, so that might be where Elseworlds comes in. We’ll also see the return of Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman as well as the arrival of Lois Lane, who will be played by Grimm’s Elizabeth Tulloch. With Supergirl, Arrow, and The Flash currently filming their 7th or 8th episodes in their respective seasons, the crossover will be starting production sometime in the coming weeks.
The Elseworlds crossover will officially begin on Sunday, December 9 through The Flash, followed by Arrow on Monday, December 10 and then at last Supergirl on Tuesday, December 11, all at 8/7c on The CW.
