Marvel Studios has found a director to lead what they hope will be a new cornerstone franchise as they move beyond Phase 3. Chloe Zhao, whose film, The Rider, was screened to great critical acclaim at Sundance, has reportedly signed on to direct The Eternals.
According to the report, Zhao, who will work from a script by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, impressed Kevin Feige and crew so much with her initial meeting that they immediately pursued a deal. The Eternals will introduce the new characters to the MCU who will connect the Cosmic and Earth-bound characters. With Zhao signing on now, it’s looking like the rumored 2020 release date may be correct. Of course with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 put on hold, Marvel Studios could also be accelerating the timeline for The Eternals. At this time, there’s been no official announcement about release dates for any films beyond Spider-Man: Far From Home.
