Kit Harington is best known for playing frowny hunk Jon Snow on HBO’s Game of Thrones. But Warner Bros was thinking of beating that by giving him the title role in Matt Reeves’ Batman. In June, the studio commissioned digital art of Harington to see how he would look as the caped crusader (Revenge of the Fans).
FROM AFFLECK TO REEVES
The production of the new Batman film has been a roller coaster since it was announced. In 2015, Ben Affleck was playing Batman / Bruce Wayne and filming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He was also scheduled to write, direct, and star in a Batman solo film to be released in 2018. After the release of Batman v Superman in 2016, Affleck stated there was no script for the Batman movie and he may not direct it.
In early 2017, Affleck stepped down as director and Matt Reeves was signed on. Matt Reeves was finishing work on War for the Planet of the Apes, so production on the Batman movie was pushed back. Reeves was also given more time to re-write the script. He stated his caped crusader would be “an almost-noir driven, detective version of Batman.”
JON SNOW AS BATMAN
The Batman is scheduled to start filming in 2019, but Affleck is no longer attached as the title character. Warner Bros has been searching for a replacement and Kit Harington is the latest in a line of rumored contenders. The digital mock-ups of Harington in the role do not mean he was a serious candidate. Only that Warner Bros was thinking about him.
Kit Harrington’s height and build match other rumored actors up to play Batman, including Jake Gyllenhaal and Ben-Hur’s Jack Huston. These choices show the direction Warner Bros and Matt Reeves may want to take the franchise. Currently, none of the mentioned actors are assured of the role. However, they are also not out of the running and rumors of Affleck returning also continue to pop up.
