Slot Machines date way back before the coming of online slots. The invention of the slot machine was back in the 19th century and since then they have made their mark in the world of gambling.

The two men behind the idea of a slot machine were Sittman and Pitt in 1891. They invented the slot machine that comprised of 5 drums and along with a total of 50 playing cards. Payouts of the first slot machines were given for lining up poker hands on the slot reels.

Liberty Bell Slot Machine 1887-1895

Charles Augustus Fey came up with the idea of a slot machine which was known as the Liberty Bell. He replaced the playing cards which were implemented on the first slot machine by Sittman and Pitt.

The cards were replaced with only 5 symbol playing cards which were hearts, diamonds, spades and a Liberty Bell. The bell acted as the Wild symbol on this slot machine and 3 bell symbols would grant you highest payouts.

However, Fey did a major blunder by not restricting his idea to be used by other people. Therefore, the design was copied by many other manufacturers. This actually paved way for new ideas in the gambling world and the Liberty Bell continues to be manufactured in different versions and designs.

The cash prize slot machines started to be phased out and this trigged the invention of Fruit slot machine in 1902. Herbert Mills was the man behind the fruit slot machine which he called the Operator Bell.

During the period of 1908, the machine became very popular and was found in high traffic places. The machine was found in bowling alleys, shops and salons. This is the slot machine that came with the BAR symbol we see on many slot machines nowadays at sites such as casino Australia online. The symbols were derived from the logo the Bell-fruit company used during those days.
