There is a disturbance in the force. The dark side swells as the Star Wars fan base fights over the state of the franchise and whether future films are worth going to. As it was, as it is, as it shall be…The Skywalkers are to blame. The Skywalkers have been destroying the galaxy for decades and now they rip the fan base into pieces. Is it time for the Skywalkers to leave the galaxy behind?
The Unifying Force
The Star Wars fan base has been angry for some time. After all the newness of the prequel trilogies faded away, we were left with a trilogy that was universally disliked. Some of us learned to accept them as they were and enjoy them. Others chose to simply hate the prequel movies. Either way we could all pretty much agree with what was wrong with them.
Along comes the Disney sequel trilogy. Episode VII had claims of copying Episode IV too closely, but again it could be widely agreed that it was a great start towards Star Wars should be. It was the bridge that was badly needed to make peace with the prequels and the originals.
The Dividing Force
Then came Episode VIII. The great schism in the Star Wars fan base was born. Many loved what Rian did with the film. It was a risk. It was different from what had come before. It took chances in an attempt to be great. However there was a vocal minority that hated the film with a passion! It was a hate that would make many of them hate everything from then on no matter what.
I will admit I walked out off The Last Jedi with my mind blown. It was not what I was expecting in any form. I knew I had to see it a second time. I listened to Yoda: “The fear of loss is a path to the Dark side…Attachment leads to jealousy. The shadow of greed that is…Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose.” This wasn’t the Luke Skywalker we had grown up with. As Han said, “This is not how I thought this day(movie) would go.” I let go of all I thought Luke was. I let go of all the theories we had all come up with since The Force Awakens. I watched The Last Jedi for what it was, and it was brilliant.
Yes there were flaws. Yes there are things we can nitpick (Canto Bight, Poppins Organa) What movie doesn’t have such moments? In the end I loved the story Rian Johnson told. The overarching thing I hear from haters most every time has to do with Luke. That wasn’t the Luke from the books we had all read. My Luke would never do such things. That was not my Luke Skywalker.
It’s Time to End.
I truly feel ending the Skywalker story is the best thing Lucasfilm could do at this point. The biggest issues seem to be with people not wanting to let go of the Legends books. Luke didn’t act right. Lando is just there to be killed like all the others, etc. No matter what Lucasfilm does, as long as it involves established characters, negative people are going to complain about what is vs what was.
If Lucasfilm ends the Skywalker/saga story with Episode IX, they have a chance to move on to new stories and new characters that do not have a previous record to compete against. I honestly think had Rey been looking for Master Pleg Dorn to restart the Jedi, The Last Jedi would be much more universally accepted. As is we are running out of Skywalkers any way. From a certain point of view you could say the Skywalkers are gone already so long as Kylo does not convert back to Ben.
Future films could be done with Rey, Poe and Finn, but don’t call them saga films anymore. Number them or not, you could just continue the story. Otherwise there is lots of universe and time to play with.
Luke was part right. Its not the Jedi’s time, but perhaps…It is time for the Skywalkers to end.
