DC Universe, Warner Bros’ highly anticipated DC branded streaming service, is gearing up to launch sometime this fall. Including a giant library of past comics, movies and TV shows, we’re getting a slew of original programming such as Titans, Doom Patrol, Swamp Thing as well as Stargirl.

From DC legend Geoff Johns, who created the Stargirl character, based on his sister Courtney who sadly died in the ’96 TWA Flight 800 explosion, the series was announced at San Diego Comic-Con this year. Set to feature Courtney Whitmore leading a new generation of young heroes, 2019 will be when the show kicks off. Johns is writing and executive producing the series, under his new production company Mad Ghost Productions as well as in association with Berlanti Productions, with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter executive producing.

As casting is currently underway, That Hashtag Show can reveal what to expect from this version of Courtney Whitmore a.k.a Stargirl! The series is looking to cast an 18+-year-old actress, of any ethnicity, to play a 15-year-old Courtney. Described as an intelligent, compassionate and athletic young woman, Courtney is witty as well as an incredible kind individual who is living a perfect teenage life in Los Angeles, California. However, her life is completely changed when her mom gets married. Because of this, Courtney is forced to leave her life in L.A. behind as she moves to Blue Valley, Nebraska with Courtney’s mom’s new husband and his family. While she struggles to adjust to life in Nebraska, from attending a new school to living with a step-family, Courtney’s life is forever changed when she discovers that her stepdad has a big secret. He used to be a superhero’s sidekick and Courtney takes it upon herself to “borrow” this superhero’s cosmic staff which leads Courtney to become a surprising inspiration as she leads a brand new generation of superheroes!

This will be the third live-action interpretation of Stargirl as the young Justice Society of America heroine have lived on the small screen before. Her first appearance in live-action was on Smallville, Britt Irvin portrayed her in a number of episodes, the first two written by Johns himself. We then saw her as a recurring guest on Legends of Tomorrow where she was played by Sarah Grey.

“STARGIRL follows High School sophomore Courtney Whitmore who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new DC Universe series reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in a fun, exciting and unpredictable series premiering in 2019, produced by Warner Bros. Television, Mad Ghost Productions and Berlanti Productions.”
