After the success of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, Warner Bros has hired more female directors hoping to replicate her success. For Supergirl, a superheroine almost as famous as Wonder Woman, the studio is specifically looking for a woman director (via Deadline).
Supergirl the Movie
Earlier this month, outlets reported a Supergirl movie was in development at Warner Bros. Oren Uziel is writing the script. The screenwriter also wrote 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox. He also created the scripts for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat movies.
Deadline reported that Warner Bros specifically wants a woman to direct Supergirl. They are also speculating that the studio wants the recreate the success Patty Jenkins found with Wonder Woman. Jenkins is currently working on the Wonder Woman sequel Wonder Woman 1984.
Wonder Woman’s Legacy
In the post Dark Knight trilogy era of DC films, Wonder Woman is the most successful. The film surpasses all other entries by a large margin both financially and critically. Many credited director Patty Jenkins for that achievement.
Jenkins was able to realize a movie with a strong female role model that appealed to a large audience. Before Wonder Woman, studio executives believed audiences were not interested in a female led action movie. Modest hits like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, and Underworld were considered for small audiences not major blockbusters.
The New Warner Bros Strategy
Wonder Woman has proven the appeal of female led blockbusters and the ability of women to direct them. Earlier this year, DC hired Ana DuVernay to direct a movie based on DC’s New Gods comics. Warner Bros picked Cathy Yan to direct Birds of Prey, a Suicide Squad spin-off featuring well known female heroes and villains. Time will tell how well Warner Bros new strategy pays off.
