Hollywood stars Ewan McGregor and Hayley Atwell play husband and wife in Disney’s newest film Christopher Robin. Ewan McGregor gained international fame when he portrayed Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars franchise. Hayley Atwell became recognized by millions when she played Agent Peggy Carter in the Captain America films and the Agent Carter television series.
Christopher Robin is an adaptation of the original Winnie the Pooh books as well as the Disney animated films and television shows. Ewan McGregor stars as an adult Christopher Robin. Hayley Atwell plays his spirited wife Evelyn Robin. And their pre-adolescent daughter Madeline Robin, is played by Bronte Carmichael.
The child Christopher Robin, who played with Winnie the Pooh and friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, has grown into a responsible man. But his work has taken him away from his family and the joy from his life. Pooh magically appears in Christopher Robin’s home in London and turns his life upside down. The following adventure reminds Christopher Robin that the most important thing in his life is his family.
Humanity from a Bear
When asked about Christopher Robin’s deeper meaning, Hayley Atwell said, “When I watched it, I watched it by myself about a week ago. And what I found so heartbreaking is that Pooh, who is almost kind of this, just beacon of love, pure unconditional love. As pets are, as my dog is really. When he is hurt by Christopher Robin, unintentionally, but when he is hurt, how he processes it, and instead of choosing to act out, or to attack back, or become in anyway defensive, he just, he’s still so open.”
“That to me is a beautiful tender moment of unconditional love. But it’s almost something that I feel like we’re born with, a little bit more. Then we learn more sophisticated tactics of defense and attack that make us slightly more bitter as we get older, when we feel hurt by something. Especially by something that we love. So, the purity in that moment of when he says, did you forget about me? And almost says it kind of like a genuine question. And then just is able to contain the pain of what that must feel like. I find that actually in its humanity and its dignity quite profound.”
Ewan McGregor later said, “It could be a story about somebody finding anything. Just finding their way back to who they really are, I suppose is the most important message.”
Revisiting Agent Carter
When asked if she misses filming the Agent Carter series, Hayley Atwell responded, “Well, I’m slightly divided. As an actor, you give what you can, do your job. To every job and every character you play. And some are going to have more impacts than others. Or this within the Marvel world has had lasting impact because of the nature of the franchise. Being a very expansive and ongoing thing. And that’s really wonderful.”
“I’ve met a lot of fans of the show. And to be kind of the custodian for that period of time, for Peggy Carter, is lovely. If there’s going to be one character that follows me around, of all the characters I’ve played, she’s the one that I think is the most palatable to kind of meet in everyday life, to be associated with.”
She added, “If I had the opportunity again to play her, then it would to feel that it was an appropriate development. And something quite much, a lot more than I’ve already done. It’s a bit of an anomaly really, as an actor, to revisit characters. And I think especially at the moment I’m always looking for new female led narratives and smart stories and things that are different and challenges.”
Atwell finished, “Not to take away from the enjoyment of playing her or the fact that I wouldn’t have ever visited revisiting it. But I think I just like variety. So, yeah.”
What about Obi-Wan Kenobi?
Before the opening of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ewan McGregor interacted with fans at a marathon screening of the films. He showed up to introduce Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith at 3:00 am. Answering a question on dealing with toxic fans, McGregor said, “So, I went down there at like 2:30, I arrived. And some of those people have been watching movies for like a day and a bit. But those were the real Star Wars fans. And I went on stage and they were surprised to see me, and asked some questions, and some stuff. And that was, they were really in their environment. I was coming into their environment because it was a huge Star Wars thing. But I enjoyed it. I thought it was fun and there was no, there was no element of that sort of pushiness from what you see on the red carpets with autograph hunters.”
When asked about the possibility of returning to the Star Wars franchise as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor apologetically said, “I don’t know anything more about it than you do. I’m afraid to say. I really don’t. But I’d be up for it. You know that.”
Christopher Robin hits theaters August 3, 2018.
