‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is filming and reports say actor Miles Teller has joined the cast.
According to Variety, their sources say that actor Tom Cruise has done screen tests with multiple actors such as Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell. In the end, the role of Goose’s Son, a prominent character in the original has been offered to Teller. Currently, there are no updates surrounding this specific role or the sequel. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ will focus on Tom Cruise’s Pete Mitchell mentoring the newer generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots.
1986’s ‘Top Gun‘, which was directed by Tony Scott featured Cruise as the lead training in the U.S. Navy’s Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School to refine his flying skills. The sequel is set to take place in modern day and see him mentoring the newer generation which may include Teller’s character. In the original, Goose ultimately dies from improperly ejecting from his aircraft and snapping his neck.
With filming currently underway from director Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy, Only the Brave), these new reports of casting have surfaced. Teller has made it mainstream as the lead in Damien Chazelle’s Academy Award winning feature ‘Whiplash’.
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is currently shooting and is set to hit theaters July 12th, 2019.
