Let’s be clear: Jared Leto starring in Sony’s Morbius film won’t affect his role in the DC Extended Universe as The Joker.
It was announced last week that Leto would be starring in a Morbius film that would be directed by Daniel Espinosa. If you had a moment of concern for what that would mean for his future as the DCEU’s The Joker, not to fret, the folks at Variety were pleased to clarify that, “Sources say this film does not affect that role.”
One could be forgiven for panicking momentarily since the DCEU’s plans for the Joker have been rather stop-and-go. The Joker has been attached to everything from Suicide Squad 2, Birds of Prey, a possible Harley vs. Joker film, and most recently, a movie of his very own. There are a lot of intentions and plans in place for The Joker but, unfortunately, any of those intentions and plans could be disrupted by a number of factors. It was not (and is not) beyond the realm of possibility that one of those project-ending factors could be an actor taking another comic book character role for the competition.
Morbius the Living Vampire is a Marvel Comics character, however, since he made his first appearance in “The Amazing Spider-Man #101” the film rights for the character are owned by Sony, along with the rest of the Spiderverse.
Leto will hardly be the first actor to play both a Marvel Comics character and a DC Comics character in their career but he will be among the first (if not the first) to play in both the DCEU and Sony’s newly minted cinematic universe which will officially kick off later this year when Venom premieres in theaters on October 5, 2018.
