Everything old is new again. While the reboot of The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico was announced months ago, we got our first look at SDCC. The pilot was screened during the CW panel for Legacies, and a trailer was also released online.
1999’s Roswell, based on the Roswell High book series by Melinda Metz, put high school dramas and relationships at the forefront focusing on alien/human hybrid Max, his sister Isobel, their friends Michael and Tess. While navigating the complexities of high school, they also faced extraterrestrial conspiracies and their alien origins. The relationship between Max and Liz, a human, was a cornerstone of the series.
The trailer for this iteration of Roswell doesn’t stray too far from the original – the trailer gives us enough to the relationship between Max and Liz is still going to be a strong point. However, Max and Liz have both been aged up – Liz is a biomedical researcher who returns home to visit her parents, both of whom are undocumented Mexican immigrants, and Max is now a cop who is once again trying to hide the secret of his extraterrestrial origins.
The new Roswell also looks to be drawing on the current social and political climates – discussing both illegal immigration and PTSD – whereas mental health definitely wasn’t the conversation it is now in the late ‘90s. It also appears to benefit from the updated technology of our time and the CGI looks miles better.
Roswell, New Mexico is slated to be a mid-season replacement for the CW’s 2018-2019 season.
