Survival MMORPG Rend Hits Early Access This Month

Frostkeep Studios, an indie game studio comprised of League of legends, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft Devs, have announced that their flagship game Rend is ready to hit early access after a successful closed Alpha.

Rend is a MMORPG with building elements, deep tech trees, and 3 rival factions against each other and against the elements.  It sounds like a more complex Planetside 2, where you take over entire regions, winner get spoils for the character to be used in the next regional fights.  Nothing quite like it out there.

Not much is known about the game play or mechanics other than the devs saying it has “RPG elements”.  It kind of reminds me of what Bethesda is trying to accomplish with Fallout 76.  I have the same question that I have for fallout that I have for Rend…

What kind of game is this?

Is it MMOPRG or sand box or Pve or Pvp?  I love the ambition of creating a game for all gamers…often however, we find that in the attempt to be all things, you can’t be anything.  No Man’s Sky was the latest in such a vaulting ambition and they paid the price for it (to be fair, they finally are building the game that was promised, so its not impossible).  It’s being marketed as a sixty person survival game, but with MMORPG mechanics and elements.  It will be cool to see it pulled off well.

Looking at least years trailers made me excited, but also worried that the classic issue of over-promising and under-delivering is going to be a thing here.

Though my perspective of the game is one with cautious optimism, I’m sure that the game will be awesome.  With developers from 3 massive AAA game titles, I don’t expect that it will be a terrible game in any capacity.

And its not like devs are going in blind either.  Jeremy Wood, co-founder and CEO, Frostkeep Studios, said this about the community,

“We have been developing Rend side-by-side with our players since we first announced the game and are grateful for the invaluable feedback they provided to help shape Rend into what it has become today: the game they want to play,”

Will it give Fallout 76 a run for its money or can both be comfortable running together?

Price point on release: $30, July 31st

Does Rend look interesting to you?  Will you find yourself taking out wildlife and each other?  Let me know in the comments down below!
