With less than a year until Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters, details are slowly being revealed as the hype for Michale Dougherty’s follow-up to Gareth Edward’s 2014 film begins to build. Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) will be staring in the third entry in the MonsterVerse franchise and recently revealed some interesting details about her character and how she fits into everything.
Farmiga plays Dr. Emma Rusell, a paleobiologist who has “figured out a way to communicate with the creatures and potentially control them using their bioacoustics on a sonar level. So she is like a DJ for the monsters.” While it is currently unknown just how this communication will play into the greater story, it sounds reminiscent to the role played by the twin fairies who accompanied Mothra in the 1964 film, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. Interestingly enough, the upcoming Legendary film will be featuring the same crop of monsters as the aforementioned 1964 film…but that’s a topic for another day!
Speaking further about the film, Farmiga touched upon how she feels the story is ultimately about the environment.
“And ‘Godzilla’ to me isn’t a film about monsters. It is a film about saving the environment. When it comes down to it that’s what emerged to me off the written page, and so I find that there has to be a little parable in it that makes me interested.”
Environmentalism is not a foreign topic to the Godzilla franchise, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it touched upon in this latest film.
Starring alongside Vera Farmiga will be Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (First Man), Bradley Whitford (The Handmaiden’s Tale), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones). Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins will be reprising their roles from the 2014 film, as well.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be in theaters on May 31st, 2019. Courtland Sutton Womens Jersey
