Australian Director Cate Shortland has been announced as the director of Marvel’s Black Widow movie. She is best known for her Nazi drama “Lore,” and this search caps off a half year search that Marvel held to find the director, which started off with 70-75 ideal candidates.

Back in June, the hunt was narrowed to Shortland and 4 other directors: Amma Asante, Maggie Betts, Melanie Laurent, and Kimberly Pierce. Now, Shortland has no agency representation, but Scarlett Johannson has been a fan of Shortland, and was pushing for her to direct the movie.

Jac Schaeffer has written the most recent draft of the film which will see Scarlett Johannson reprising her role as  Russian Spy turned Avenger. The report confirms our story that the solo film will be set before the events of The Avengers. The film will be Marvel’s second female-centric superhero movie after Captain Marvel releases on March 8, 2019.

Given the timing of the announcement, the film looks like it will be shooting next year, and it might be releasing in July 2020.
