Ant-Man and the Wasp – The Future of the Quantum Realm

(SPOILERS for Ant-Man and the Wasp)

In the Marvel film franchise, the Quantum Realm is another name for Marvel Comics’ Microverse.  A smaller universe tucked away inside the big universe.  The marble sized galaxy in Men in Black is a similar example.  As is the microverse, miniverse, and teenyverse Rick and Morty fans would be familiar with.  The Quantum Realm is another place Marvel can go to find new adventures, heroes, and villains.

The Quantum Realm has now appeared in Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Doctor Strange.  At a press conference for Ant-Man and the Wasp, producer Kevin Feige said, “Without giving anything away, we love these, they’re all story telling tools, new places, new things.  In the first film, it was, we got a glimpse of it.  And for people who like to go through frame by frame, there’s a silhouette of Janet as the Wasp in there.  Which is a big story element in this movie.  There are things that you see back there, that Peyton has put in there.  Where and how they pay off, in the near term, in the long term, remains to be scene.”

The same way the franchise went into outer space with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel can show adventures in inner space with Ant-Man and the Wasp.  The return of Janet van Dyne in the new Ant-Man sequel teases the possibilities.  Janet is older and wearing clothes different from the Wasp suit she had on when she disappeared.  That means she wasn’t frozen in time like Captain America, but actively living in the Quantum Realm for decades.

Janet returns wearing robes and carrying a sword like weapon.  She also learned how to channel the quantum energies.  Janet helped the Ghost by giving her the healing energies of the Quantum Realm.  Thus, all the evidence points to the Wasp having had contact with an advanced civilization while she was gone.

In 2008, Janet van Dyne, was killed at the end of Marvel’s Secret Invasion comic book series.  Four years later, Marvel readers found out she was really alive and stuck in the Microverse.  The Wasp had survived among the tiny civilizations that inhabit the sub atomic realm.  When the Avengers went to save her, they are attacked by the alien warlord Gouzar.  He’s like Darth Vader, but with gold armor and a centaur’s body.  They eventually win and bring Janet home.

Could the next Ant-Man and the Wasp film be an adventure like in the comics?  Another heist film, but on an epic scale like the Guardians of the Galaxy?  This will definitely not be the last time we see Scott, Hope, Hank, and Janet.  Or Luis.
